World Press Freedom Day – May 3On World Press Freedom Day, the International Association of Broadcasting pays tribute to all journalists and media organizations who, in every corner of the world, carry out their work with courage, independence, and a strong commitment to freedom.
This date, proclaimed by the United Nations in commemoration of the Windhoek Declaration, reminds us that a free, pluralistic, and independent press is an essential condition for democracy and the rule of law.
Freedom of expression, enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, is not a privilege: it is a fundamental right of every individual and an indispensable guarantee for open societies.
Today, more than ever, it is necessary to reaffirm the duty of States to protect journalists, ensure their safety, and prevent all forms of censorship, intimidation, or violence.
From IAB, we call for strengthening free and independent journalism and for defending the right of citizens to receive plural information free from interference.
Because without press freedom, there is no democracy.
