IAB Condemns Attacks Against Journalist Miriam Leitão and Reaffirms Its Support for Press Freedom in Brazil
The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) expresses its strongest condemnation of the attacks and insults directed against Brazilian journalist Miriam Leitão, as well as its deep concern over the misogynistic remarks and incitement to violence made against her.
The IAB considers it unacceptable for journalists and media organizations to be subjected to intimidation campaigns, discrediting efforts, or speech that promotes violence as a consequence of carrying out their journalistic work. Such conduct constitutes a serious violation of press freedom, human dignity, and society’s right to receive free, pluralistic, and independent information.
As established in Principle 9 of the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, intimidation, threats, or any form of pressure against journalists violate fundamental rights and severely restrict the exercise of freedom of expression.
The IAB expresses its full solidarity with journalist Miriam Leitão and likewise reiterates its support for the position taken by the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters (ABERT), which has strongly condemned these acts in defense of the free exercise of journalism.
The IAB also trusts that the competent authorities will carry out the appropriate investigations and adopt any measures that may be warranted in accordance with the rule of law.
The IAB reaffirms its unwavering commitment to the defense of freedom of expression, press freedom, and the protection of all media professionals throughout the Americas.
