IAB condemns threats against journalist in Chile and warns of risks to freedom of expression
The International Association of Broadcasting (IAB) expresses its concern and condemns the threats directed against journalist Eugenio Cornejo, from Radio Aconcagua in Chile, following the dissemination of intimidating statements linked to his journalistic work.
As established in the Declaration of Principles on Freedom of Expression of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights, intimidation, threats or pressure against social communicators violate fundamental rights and severely restrict the exercise of freedom of expression and of the press.
IAB values the actions taken by the authorities to address this situation and urges that efforts continue to guarantee the safety of the affected journalist, as well as adequate conditions for the exercise of journalistic work.
IAB expresses its solidarity with journalist Eugenio Cornejo, with the Chilean Broadcasters Association (ARCHI) and with all media professionals, and reaffirms its permanent commitment to the defense of freedom of expression and freedom of the press in the Americas.
