45 IAB General Assembly

IAB HELD ITS 45th GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND ELECTED NEW
AUTHORITIES FOR THE TERM 2015 - 2017

The International Association of Broadcasting met in San Salvador, Republic of El Salvador, for its 45th General Assembly with the participation of delegations of broadcasters and experts from the countries of the three Americas.

The event was organized by the Salvadoran Association of Broadcasters - ASDER and took place from October 11 to 14, concluding their work with important resolutions on Freedom of Expression in different countries, Copyright, Technologies, New Developments and Legal Affairs.

NEW AUTHORITIES

IAB Assembly unanimously and by acclamation elected the new President of the institution, Eng. José Luis Saca, who chaired the Assembly. During the opening ceremony he expressed his commitment to continue the determined struggle to defend Freedom of Expression, Free and private Broadcasting and IAB`s principles, as well as the exemplary unity of its members.

Eng. Saca is President of ASDER and Vice President of FM Radio Corporación of El Salvador. He has an extensive and outstanding career in executive positions in IAB, where he was part of the Executive Group for several years.

Alexandre K. Jobim, IAB outgoing President, received significant expressions of appreciation for his leadership of the organization since October 2013, being unanimously named as Honorary Member
of the Association.

OPENING CEREMONY

The opening ceremony of the Assembly was attended by Mr. Nayib Armando Bukele, Mayor of the city of San Salvador, who appreciated the presence of broadcasters from across the continent and highlighted their important role in the fundamental mission of defending Freedom of Expression.

Mr. Boris Eserski, IAB Honorary President and President of Telecorporación Salvadoreña was part of the Table of Honour. During the ceremony, he was honored for the first 50 years of Channel 2 of El Salvador. Likewise, Radio Cooperativa of Chile was awarded for its 80 years. Mr. Jaime Ahumada, General Manager, received the testimony.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION TO HECTOR OSCAR AMENGUAL

The opening ceremony also provided the setting to honor Dr. Hector Oscar Amengual in recognition of his brilliant work and a special dedication to IAB for more than 27 years, awarding him as Honorary Member of the Institution.

KEYNOTE SPEECHES

During the Second Session on October 13th, Dr. Marcel Granier, President of RCTV, delivered a keynote speech, where he spoke about the current situation of the media and Freedom of Expression in Venezuela, highlighting the importance of the recent decision of the InterAmerican
Court of Human Rights, which ordered the Venezuelan government to restore the frequency of channel 2 to RCTV and return the goods that were illegally seized, setting essential jurisprudence for the protection of fundamental rights in the Hemisphere.

Another important event in the extensive agenda of the 45th General Assembly was the presentation of Mr. José Manuel Gómez Bravo, Director of Intellectual Property of Grupo Prisa of Spain, who spoke about the importance of Copyright and Related Rights for broadcasters facing the new technology platforms for content distribution.
